Sermon 26 May 2019

How do we pursue God’s vision for this church? by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:

  • Basic Requirements
    An open heart
    The desire to obey
    An unconquerable love for Jesus
A “Berean” attitude: testing what you hear against the whole of Scripture
  • Building the Kingdom of God
A tiny seed grows into a tree of protection
    The tree bears fruit
Not every tree is of God
Bad trees grow from a small beginning too – leaven
  • Checking the fruit
Good fruit: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control
Bad fruit: selfishness, strife, division, manipulating or controlling others
  • What should we do?
    Do not bring offense
Do not cause others to stumble
    Examine ourselves
    Repent of our sin
Love one another in word and deed

Sermon 19 May 2019

Why are you here? by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  We are here to do the works of God.  To do His works we must know Him, know what is important to Him, and know what He wants for each of us and from each of us.  We are called to do greater works than Jesus did, but that is impossible unless we have the same attitude He did and are under authority as He was.  Faith is not commanding the circumstances of life to line up with our expectations; faith is living every moment of our lives in subjection to the authority of God.  Is that why you are here?

Lectionary:  Acts 13:44-52; Psalm 145:1-21; Revelation 21:1-6; John 13:31-35  (sermon not from lectionary)

Referenced Scriptures:  Isaiah 61:1-4; John 6:28-29; Luke 6:46-49; Matthew 22:37-40; John 14:15-17; Luke 10:30-35; Hebrews 11:6; Luke 7:6-9; Luke 7:12-15; John 5:19; John 14:12

Sermon 12 May 2019

Awake, O sleeper! by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  Jesus went about doing good and healing the people, yet He was put to death.  He committed no crime: people simply did not like what He was saying.  If we are Jesus’ disciples, some will not like what we say.  Wake from your slumber and be a true disciple!

Lectionary:  Acts 13:26-39; Psalm 23:1-6; Revelation 7:9-14; John 10:22-30

Referenced Scriptures:  Isaiah 53:3-9; Psalm 22:1-18; Psalm 69:7-9; John 18:38; Ephesians 5:14; Zechariah 4:6

Sermon 05 May 2019

Contributing, or committed? by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  We are Christ’s body: what He did, we must also do.  Sometimes we must be blinded by the Truth before we can see it.  We can only succeed if we are committed.  To be committed is to be willing to suffer.  We are Christ’s body: what was done to Him will also be done to us.

Lectionary:  Acts 9:1-16; Psalm 30; Revelation 5:11-13; John 21:1-14

Referenced Scriptures:  Matthew 25:35-36, 40; Romans 8:29-30
