Sermon 26 Jan 2020  (3rd Sunday after Epiphany)

Do the works of Him who sends you by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  Jesus came into a simpler time and called simple fishermen to lay down their nets and become fishers of men.  He called them to display the power and glory and mercy of God.  He chose the lowly to nullify – to expose as worth nothing – the wisdom and power and exalted things of this world.  He has called you to do the same.  It requires sacrifice, and it requires work: the sweat of your brow.

Lectionary: Isaiah 8:20-9:2; Psalm 27:1-14; 1 Corinthians 1:26-31; Matthew 4:12-23

Referenced Scriptures:  Philippians 4:19; 2 Peter 1:2-4; Matthew 9:6; Matthew 9:21; Matthew 12:13; Matthew 15:26; Matthew 17:27; Mark 10:49; Luke 5:4; Luke 13:12; Luke 17:14; John 2:7; John 4:50; John 5:8; John 9:7; John 11:38; John 21:6; John 5:30a; John 6:26-27; John 9:4-5

For what do you lay down your life?

Sermon 19 Jan 2020  (Our Lord the Giver of Life)

For what do you lay down your life? by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  Abortion is a problem of epidemic proportions, but it is only a symptom.  Everyone, every day, lays down (sacrifices) lesser things for the sake of greater things; this is a basic principle of life.  The central issue is what you use as the basis on which you determine what is greater and what is lesser.  You can lay down important things to make your life more comfortable and enjoyable … or you can lay down your life for the most important thing – Jesus.  Abortion happens when one lays down another person’s life for the sake of their own.

Lectionary: Jeremiah 31:10-17; Psalm 10; 1 Corinthians 15:19-26; Matthew 18:1-5

Referenced Scriptures:  2 Corinthians 3:18; John 6:63; Genesis 2:7; Psalm 127:3-5a; John 10:14-18; John 13:37-38; John 21:15-19; John 15:12-14; 1 John 3:16-18

Sermon 12 Jan 2020  (The Baptism of our Lord)

Are you a product of your past? by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  The world says you are a product of your environment: your experiences, your choices and decisions, and your human nature.  Jesus came to free you from being a product of anything, to make you a new creation.  The enemy wants to keep you trapped in the chains of your past.

Lectionary: Isaiah 42:1-9; Psalm 89:19-29; Acts 10:34-38; Matthew 3:13-17

Referenced Scriptures:  Revelation 19:6-9a; Matthew 26:26-28, 38-41; John 1:29; 2 Corinthians 5:17; Isaiah 61:1-3

Sermon 05 Jan 2020  (Epiphany Sunday)

The cart before the horse by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  King Herod called all the chief priests and scribes of the people together and inquired where the Messiah was to be born, and they told him the very town … yet they had no clue His birth was happening!  Both King Herod and the Jews were seeking the Messiah for their own purposes, not His.  They were putting the cart before the horse.

Lectionary: Isaiah 60:1-6; Psalm 72:1-19; Ephesians 3:1-12; Matthew 2:1-12

Referenced Scriptures:  Micah 5:2; Deuteronomy 28:13-19; Colossians 1:15-18; 1 Corinthians 12:27
