Sermon 25 September 2022 (Anniversary of Bp. Elmer Belmonte’s consecration)

A babe, or a royal priesthood? by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  Do you yearn to be in the presence of the Lord? Not for Him to be in you, but for you to be in His presence, in the place where He “dwells”? We too often want Him to come and live with us, but He desires for us to live with Him, to come into His kingdom. Have we matured enough to give ourselves to Him … or are we still hanging on to who we’ve been?

Lectionary: Genesis 28:10-17; Psalm 84; 1 Peter 2:1-5, 9-10; Matthew 21:12-16

Referenced Scriptures: Matthew 6:25-26; John 15:5-7; Joshua 5:13-15; John 15:18-20; 1 Peter 1:23; John 3:3; 1 Corinthians 3:1-3; Galatians 5:22-24; Ephesians 2:19-22; Hebrews 5:12-14

Intercession, repentance, restoration, and service

Sermon 11 September 2022 (Proper 19)

Intercession, repentance, restoration, and service by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  Moses intercedes for God’s people after God reveals the need; David confesses his grievous sins and obtains mercy; Paul reminds himself and others of his sinful past to show the depth of God’s mercy; then Jesus makes sense of it all in His parable of the lost sheep. What sort of God would do this? “There is nothing that unbelievers and all people are so amazed at as when we [Christians] are merciful.” – John Chrysostom (344-407).

Lectionary: Exodus 32:7-14; Psalm 51:1-19; 1 Timothy 1:12-17; Luke 15:1-10

Referenced Scriptures: Exodus 32:1; Matthew 11:29-30; Luke 13:6-9; Job 16:21; Exodus 32:32; 2 Samuel 12:1-15; Matthew 5:7; John 13:10; John 14:2

What in the world is going on?

Sermon 04 September 2022 (Proper 18)

What in the world is going on? by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  Yesterday was the March for Life UK. It was all about choice – but not the choice blared out by the pro-abortion protestors. God has always given man a choice, and man has most often chosen poorly.

The Bible is God’s story. The early Church understood Jesus as the primary subject of the story, and the Church as the object that Jesus works in and through. Somewhere over the centuries this story was lost, and now the individual believer is the subject of the story: Jesus is on the outside awaiting an invitation to come into the heart. This has led to many errors in the Church, but God is doing a mighty work behind the scenes to bring correction. He is offering a new choice to His people, doing a work in our day that you won’t believe!

(I am indebted to the book “Jesus cropped from the picture” by Don Allsman, published by The Urban Ministry Institute, 2009, for many of the themes in this sermon.)

Lectionary: Deuteronomy 30:15-20; Psalm 139:1-16; Philemon 1:4-16; Luke 14:26-33

Referenced Scriptures: Genesis 2:15-17; Acts 13:41; Habakkuk 1:5; John 17:21; 1 John 3:8; Matthew 12:28; Philippians 2:10-11; Ephesians 6:12; 2 Timothy 2:4; Mark 3:24; Luke 11:17; Joshua 24:15
