Sermon 29 March 2018  (Maundy Thursday)

Jesus chose the narrow way

Sermon 25 March 2018  (Palm Sunday)

Jesus chose the narrow way by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  Jesus’ incarnation as a man enabled Him to suffer.  He appeared to be suffering because He was guilty.  He was guilty – but the guilt was not His own: it was ours.  He had the power and authority to avoid suffering, but He chose to follow His Father’s will.  We are called to do the same.

Lectionary:  Isaiah 52:13-53:12; Psalm 22:1-21; Philippians 2:5-11; Mark 14:32-15:39

Referenced Scriptures:  Luke 4:5-8; John 5:19; Mark 10:32-34; Philippians 2:12-13; Matthew 7:13-14

The mind of Christ

Sermon 18 March 2018  (Lent 5)

The mind of Christ by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  Peter disappointed Jesus, and Jesus disappointed Peter.  Even God’s Word we apply differently, according to our own desires.  God tells Jeremiah that under the new covenant it doesn’t have to be like that.  What would the church look like if we all had the mind of Christ?

Lectionary:  Jeremiah 31:31-34; Psalm 51:1-17; Hebrews 10:5-10; John 12:20-28

Referenced Scriptures:  Luke 22:60-62; Mark 8:31-32; Romans 8:8; 1 Corinthians 2:13-16; Ephesians 4:11-13; Matthew 13:45; Philippians 3:14; Hebrews 12:1; Luke 9:23

Believing is not enough

Sermon 11 March 2018  (Lent 4)

Believing is not enough by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  When the Israelites were punished with deadly snakes, God didn’t heal them directly.  He provided the means for their healing, but they had to do something to receive it.  This is how God operates, even for our salvation through Jesus Christ:  He provides the gift and the means to receive it, but we must act in order to take hold of the gift and make it our own.  He has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, but we must act to take possession and use them.  Sometimes we must fight.

Lectionary:  Numbers 21:4-9; Psalm 107:1-3, 17-22; Ephesians 2:1-9; John 3:14-21

Referenced Scriptures:  2 Peter 1:2-4; John 1:11-13; John 3:3b; Ephesians 6:10-13

Sermon 04 March 2018  (Lent 3)

What have I done? by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  “Let us not think little of our sins because they are slight, but let us fear them because they are many.  Drops of rain are small, but because they are very many, they fill rivers and submerge houses, and sometimes by their force they even carry off mountains.” – Caesarius of Arles, 6th century bishop.

Lectionary:  Exodus 20:1-17; Psalm 19:1-14; 1 Corinthians 1:18-25; John 2:13-22

Referenced Scriptures:  Matthew 22:37-40; James 2:8-10; Matthew 7:24-27
