Sermon 29 Sep 2019

It’s not enough to avoid doing evil by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  We ask for much in prayer, and God wants us to ask. We have seen Him answer prayers, but there are many prayers that remain unanswered.  Could it be that He is waiting for us to be faithful in what is least, to show that we will be faithful also in much?  The rich man in the Gospel parable didn’t do any evil, yet he spent eternity in Hades because he failed to do good.  Jesus warned, “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees” (who displayed outward dedication but whose hearts were empty tombs) “and the Sadducees” (who compromised the faith to support their great wealth and preserve their status).  They thought performance of the rites was all God required, and with that finished they could do whatever they pleased.  Don’t make the same mistake.

Lectionary:  Amos 6:1-7; Psalm 146:1-10; 1 Timothy 6:17-19; Luke 16:19-31

Referenced Scriptures:  Matthew 13:8; Luke 16:10-13; Revelation 3:14-22; Matthew 6:19-21, 24; Matthew 16:26-27; Matthew 16:6, 8

Are you a prostitute?

Sermon 22 Sep 2019

Are you a prostitute? by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  The Gospel tells of a dishonest manager praised for his shrewd preparations for judgment.  Bp. Elmer Belmonte gives us counsel on the history of the ICCEC.  The Old Testament reading warns what happens when we abuse the poor and kill the innocent.  Are we faithful to obey (a) those God places in authority over us, or (b) only those who pay us to obey?  If the answer is (b), there’s a word for that.

Lectionary:  Amos 8:4-12; Psalm 113; 1 Timothy 2:1-8; Luke 16:1-12

Referenced Scriptures:  Matthew 6:19-21; John 17:21; Hebrews 13:17

Sermon 21 Sep 2019         Holy Matrimony of Wyman Hau and Liezl Macasling

And they shall become one flesh by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  What we do today in this place is not a cultural ceremony, a series of ritual acts symbolizing meaningful ideas. It is not a legal ceremony sanctioned by the government.  What we do today in this time and in this place is so much more….

Lectionary:  Genesis 2:4-9,15-24; Psalm 127; 1 Corinthians 13:1-13; Matthew 7:21, 24-29

Sermon 15 Sep 2019

More rejoicing in heaven by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  In today’s readings we hear the heart of Moses, the heart of David, and the heart of Paul, all of whom were touched by God.  In the Gospel we hear the heart of God in Jesus Christ.  When we receive Jesus Christ we are transformed, and God is beginning that work of transformation in baptism today.

Lectionary:  Exodus 32:7-14; Psalm 51:1-19; 1 Timothy 1:12-17; Luke 15:1-10

Referenced Scriptures:  Acts 13:22; Romans 8:28-29

The insatiable hunger for recognition

Sermon 01 Sep 2019

The insatiable hunger for recognition by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  Why would someone exalt himself in the king’s presence?  Why would someone take the place of greatest honour for himself?  In our day the culture has a new defining force, a mission to be accomplished, an extreme hunger that must be satisfied but never is: to be recognized.  It’s not about making a difference but being known, being followed.  But where does our true value reside?

Lectionary:  Proverbs 25:6-12; Psalm 112; Hebrews 13:1-8; Luke 14:1, 7-14

Referenced Scriptures:  Isaiah 59:12b-15; John 14:6
