Sermon 25 February 2018  (Lent 2)

Jesus or the past: which will you choose? by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  How shall a young man cleanse his way?  By keeping to the Word made flesh, Jesus Christ.  How do we stop repeating the behaviours that control us?  The three steps to freedom (see last week’s sermon).  How should we love?  As Jesus loved us.

It is not a suggestion; it is a commandment.  Which will you choose?

Sermon 18 February 2018  (Lent 1)

Three steps to freedom by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  “If you keep doin’ what you been doin’, you gonna keep gettin’ what you been gettin’.”  But if you want something you’ve never had, then you must do something you’ve never done.  Three steps to freedom, taken by the prodigal son:

  • The prodigal “came to himself”: he realized where he was, and where he could be.
  • He confessed his sin: “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, and I am no longer worthy to be called your son.”
  • He submitted himself to his father: “Make me like one of your hired servants.”

Lectionary:  Genesis 9:8-17; Psalm 25:1-10; 1 Peter 3:18-22; Mark 1:9-15  (sermon not from lectionary)

Referenced Scriptures:  Romans 7:15, 20, 24-25; Luke 15:11-32; Matthew 13:45-46

Sermon 14 February 2018  (Ash Wednesday)

Look into the Mirror by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  Life is a journey; our salvation is also a journey: we have been saved, we are being saved, and we shall be saved.  God spent a few days taking the Israelites out of Egypt, but an entire generation taking Egypt out of the Israelites.  We have been removed from the kingdom of sin, but there are still sins that haven’t been removed from us.  It is a process, and that process begins with looking into the Mirror of Scripture.

Lectionary:  Joel 2:1-2, 12-17; Psalm 103:8-14; 2 Corinthians 5:20-6:10; Matthew 6:1-6, 16-21

Referenced Scriptures:  2 Timothy 1:8b-9a; 1 Corinthians 1:18; Romans 5:9-10; Romans 6:6, 12; Romans 7:15; James 1:23-25
