A lack of intent

Sermon 20 March 2022 (Lent 3)

A lack of intent by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  Intent – the earnest determination to do something – is important in your Christian walk. Without it you’ll miss opportunities for growth, maturity, and even blessing; with it, the Holy Spirit will lead you upward along His path for you. And if you’re in between, kinda wishy-washy … that’s a really dangerous place to be.

Lectionary:  Isaiah 55:1-9; Psalm 103:1-13; 1 Corinthians 10:1-12; Luke 13:1-9

Referenced Scriptures: John 5:14; Numbers 13:26-14:45; Mark 5:1-20; Luke 9:51; Isaiah 50:7; Revelation 3:15-21

Crumbs from your table

Sermon 13 March 2022 (Lent 2)

Crumbs from your table by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  Jesus implied the Canaanite woman, who asked Him to heal her daughter, was akin to a little dog. Jesus’ healing power was so important to her that she let His words pass and answered wisely.
Imagine you were this woman; could you have done the same? Now what if the roles were reversed: you were sitting at the table feasting, and Jesus was at your feet asking bread from you. How would you respond?

Lectionary:  Genesis 15:1-21; Psalm 27:1-14; Philippians 3:17-4:1; Luke 13:22-30

Referenced Scriptures: Matthew 15:22-28; Revelation 3:15-21; 1 Samuel 2:7; Genesis 14:22-23; Matthew 23:27; Matthew 7:13-15

Lent is a gift of opportunity

Sermon 06 March 2022 (Lent 1)

Lent is a gift of opportunity by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  Lent is not a time of self-condemnation; it is a time of pruning. Jesus tells us “things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart”, so examining our words and actions can help us examine the true state of our heart. God provides us this opportunity to cooperate with His pruning, to remove those things in our life which keep us from intimacy with Him.

Lectionary:  Deuteronomy 26:1-11; Psalm 91:1-5, 14-16; Romans 10:6-13; Luke 4:1-13

Referenced Scriptures: John 15:2; Romans 12:1-2; Matthew 15:18-19; Matthew 13; 1 Corinthians 9:27; Matthew 22:1-14; Psalm 42:1

Transfiguration and the removal of your veil

Sermon 27 February 2022 (Last Sunday of Epiphany)

Transfiguration and the removal of your veil by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  When Jesus told His disciples what lay before Him as the Christ, Peter rebuked Him because it didn’t match his expectations for the Messiah. A week later Jesus was on the mountaintop with Moses and Elijah speaking about the same topic – His departure. Even then, Peter, James, and John didn’t understand … their understanding was veiled. How do we remove the veil? How can we be transfigured – transformed?

Lectionary:  Exodus 34:29-35; Psalm 99; 2 Corinthians 3:12-18; Luke 9:28-36

Referenced Scriptures: Matthew 16; Luke 10:25-37; Luke 10:38-42; John 4:1-42; Matthew 23:37

Sermon 20 February 2022 (Epiphany 7)

God’s vision for you will come by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  God has a destination, a destiny for you. You may have an idea what it is, or you may not. The key is that it will come, even if you feel it’s taking too long or even that it’s too late. Part of that destination, that vision, is for you to be one with Him.

Lectionary:  Genesis 45:3-15; Psalm 37:1-18; 1 Corinthians 15:42b-49; Luke 6:27-38

Referenced Scriptures: Habakkuk 2:1-4; Genesis 37:7; John 3:17; Genesis 50:20; Matthew 28:18; Matthew 10:24; Isaiah 66:2; John 17:21; Psalm 56:5; 2 Peter 3:16; Acts 13:9-10; 1 John 2:15; Matthew 14:15-16

Sermon 13 February 2022 (Epiphany 6)

God’s heart is restoration by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  Since the fall of man, God has made restoration His primary action: reconciling man to Himself. God is love, and that love fuels His heart of restoration. Our part is to cooperate with His restoring acts.

Lectionary:  Jeremiah 17:5-10; Psalm 1; 1 Corinthians 15:12-20; Luke 6:17-26

Referenced Scriptures: Psalm 126; 2 Corinthians 5:19; 1 John 4:8; Genesis 1:27; 1 Timothy 6:10-12; 2 Timothy 3:1-7; Isaiah 30:21; 2 Corinthians 5:18-21; Matthew 22:37-39; Jeremiah 17:9; Ezekiel 36:26; Revelation 2:4; Matthew 6:33

The pattern of your calling

Sermon 06 February 2022 (Epiphany 5)

The pattern of your calling by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  Sanctification comes before sending; self-humbling, cleansing, and setting apart comes before commissioning; training and equipping comes before launching out. In all this preparation the heart is even more important than practical skills or even God’s gifts. That’s because of how the enemy works: if the heart is not prepared, then just like King Uzziah, the enemy will pervert and corrupt it.

Lectionary:  Isaiah 6:1-8; Psalm 138:1-8; 1 Corinthians 15:1-10; Luke 5:1-11

Referenced Scriptures: Isaiah 1-6

Are you a leaf or a rock?

Sermon 30 January 2022 (Epiphany 4)

Are you a leaf or a rock? by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  We live in turbulent times, like the roaring rapids of a river. We can be carried along like a leaf by the world and the flesh, battered by the devil … or we can stand as a rock in the midst of the turbulence, unmoved and faithful to the One who knows us, who is our refuge, who loves us and calls us to love in the same way.

Lectionary:  Jeremiah 1:4-10; Psalm 71:1-24; 1 Corinthians 13:1-8a; Luke 4:21-31

Referenced Scriptures: Hebrews 12:25-27; John 15:1-8; Galatians 1:15; Luke 1:41; Romans 4:17; 2 Corinthians 10:5; Isaiah 61:4; 1 John 4:8; Job 19:25-27; Matthew 6:15; 1 John 4:18; Luke 4:20; John 1:11

What does true Christian faith look like?

Sermon 23 January 2022 (Epiphany 3)

What does true Christian faith look like? by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  Nehemiah shows us what true faith looked like even under the Law, the old covenant: faithfulness driven by love and gratitude. But what about the new covenant? At the Last Supper Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” Not only does this tell us that Jesus is the way; it reveals the destination of that way: an intimate relationship with the Father.

Lectionary:  Nehemiah 8:1-10 ; Psalm 19:1-14; 1 Corinthians 12:12-20; Luke 4:14-21

Referenced Scriptures: John 14:1-9; Galatians 4:19
