Commit your way to the Lord

Sermon 24 Feb 2019  (Youth Cursillo at The Friars in Aylesford)

Commit your way to the Lord by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  Do not fret because of those who are evil, even though it seems like they are winning.  Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.  This is not a shortcut to satisfying your greed: if you delight in Him, your desires will match His desires for you and He will grant those desires in abundance.

Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him and He will do this.  To commit means to decide on a direction and pursue that direction wholeheartedly before you know what the final result will be.  God will guarantee success (as He defines it) in your endeavours if you will commit your way to the Lord.

The Beatitudes vs The Man-attitudes

Sermon 17 Feb 2019

The Beatitudes vs The Man-attitudes by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  Cursed is the one who trusts in man … but blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord.  Those who live a life in Christ do so because they are always meditating on the Word of the Lord.  The Beatitudes of Jesus Christ are just the opposite of what mankind proclaims – the “Man-attitudes”:

  • You are blessed when you have everything you want
  • You are blessed when you’ve eaten all you can
  • You are blessed when you’re happy
  • You are blessed when everyone loves you, and likes all your Facebook and Twitter posts

The importance of spiritual warfare

Sermon 03 Feb 2019

The importance of spiritual warfare by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  Before the wars, earthquakes, famines, pestilences, and signs of the end times come, you – Christians – will be delivered up to the religious authorities, prisons, kings, and rulers.  You will be hated by all for Jesus’ name’s sake.  You have three alternatives: proclaim and live the truth; persecute those who proclaim the truth; or sit by and be an accomplice to the persecutors.  What will you do?

Lectionary: Jeremiah 1:4-10; Psalm 71:1-6, 15-17; 1 Corinthians 13:1-8a; Luke 4:21-31

Referenced Scriptures: Psalm 119:9-16; Luke 21:10-17; 2 Timothy 3:1-5; John 16:1-4; Proverbs 6:12-15; Revelation 3:14-16

The context of spiritual warfare

Sermon 27 Jan 2019

The context of spiritual warfare by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  Good vs evil.  God has no equal.  Faithful angels vs satan and the fallen angels.  Humans are captives of satan until they determine to follow God.  The enemy is a deceiver who can appear as an angel of light and quote Scripture.  We must prepare, and we must fight.

Lectionary: Nehemiah 8:1-10; Psalm 19:1-14; 1 Corinthians 12:12-20; Luke 4:14-21

Referenced Scriptures: Revelation 12:4; Revelation 9:1b; 2 Corinthians 11:14; Matthew 4:5-6; Ephesians 6:10-20

What is spiritual warfare?

Sermon 20 Jan 2019

What is spiritual warfare? by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  From the very beginning man understood that God builds into every created thing its essence, its meaning.  The culture of our day, however, has adopted satan’s lie that created things have meaning only as it is assigned by another human.  This lie allows a wanted baby to be a blessing requiring protection, while an unwanted baby is a pestilence requiring destruction.  Our battle against satan is primarily a battle against this lie.

Spiritual warfare is more than belief; it is more than quoting Scripture; it is more than praying.  Spiritual warfare is ultimately refusing to do the works of the devil, and choosing to do the works of God.  Faith without works is dead.

Lectionary: Jeremiah 31:10-17; Psalm 10; 1 Corinthians 15:19-26; Matthew 18:1-5

Referenced Scriptures: Genesis 1:27; Ephesians 6:12; James 2:14-17,20-23; 1 John 3:8b; 1 Corinthians 15:57

ALL things work together for good

Sermon 13 Jan 2019

ALL things work together for good by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”  This Scripture does not mean they will seem good at the time, or that they will seem good to you personally.  God sometimes asks us to do the seemingly unnecessary; do it anyway.  Push the rock.

Lectionary: Isaiah 42:1-7; Psalm 29:1-11; Acts 10:34-38; Luke 3:15-16, 21-22

Referenced Scriptures: Romans 8:26-28; 1 Corinthians 2:16-3:3; Matthew 3:15-17

Arise!

Sermon 06 Jan 2019

Arise! by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  Isaiah 60:1-6 is a prophecy to Israel, but it is also a spiritual prophecy to anyone who belongs to Jesus Christ.  The light of Christ has shone on each of us, but has it made a difference in us?  If not, or if the difference has grown old and stale … Jesus is still waiting, still calling, still seeking.  Let the light in, so that it may shine out through you..

Lectionary: Isaiah 60:1-6; Psalm 72:1-17; Ephesians 3:1-12; Matthew 2:1-12

Referenced Scriptures: 2 Corinthians 4:3-6; Luke 14:16-24; John 15:1-16

The Lord has done it!

Sermon 30 Dec 2018

The Lord has done it! by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  We gather together to give to God and others, and to receive from God and others, that we may hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering.  We were placed under the guardianship of the Law, but it was never meant to be permanent.  We have become heirs, but we don’t become a mature child of God until we allow His Holy Spirit to make our decisions for us according to His principles.  At that point we begin to take possession of our promised inheritance.

Lectionary: Isaiah 61:10-62:3; Psalm 148; Galatians 4:1-7; Luke 2:22-40
