The way of the servant

Sermon 14 Apr 2019  Palm Sunday

The way of the servant by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary: Everyone agrees there are great problems in our world today.  In the world, everyone’s answer to every problem is the same: “Everyone else must give me what I want, what I deserve.”  Jesus Christ has already provided the answer to every problem, but His answer is just the opposite of the world’s answer.

Press on!

Sermon 07 Apr 2019

Press on! by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary: You are called to be like Jesus.  You must fight the world, the flesh, and the devil in order to move forward.  Trials will come, but joy will follow.  Don’t fight only against that which is painful; fight also against selfish pleasures which will hinder your faith far more than any sickness or disease.

Referenced Scriptures: Romans 8:28-29; Psalm 30:5b, 11-12; John 15:5; Philippians 4:13

Confess!

Sermon 31 Mar 2019

Confess! by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary: We are greatly blessed when the Lord does not count our sins against us.  This is only possible because of Jesus Christ.  He paid it all, but there is one thing we must do: we must confess our sins.  We have been given the ministry of reconciliation, but we must first be reconciled to one another and to God.

Lectionary: Joshua 5:2-12; Psalm 32:1-11; 2 Corinthians 5:16-21; Luke 15:1-3, 11b-32

Referenced Scriptures: Isaiah 53:5-6; 1 John 1:5-10; 1 John 2:3-6; 1 John 2:9-11

Humble yourself!

Sermon 24 Mar 2019

Humble yourself! by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  All sin separates us from God, but the sin of pride is especially deadly.  The opposite of pride is humility.  We are consistently exhorted to humble ourselves.  One key to humbling ourselves is fasting: abstaining from food for a time (and not making up for it afterward).  Jesus expects us to fast, just as He expects us to give and to pray.  Therefore, humble yourself before the Lord.

Lectionary: Isaiah 55:1-9; Psalm 103:1-22; 1 Corinthians 10:1-13; Luke 13:1-9

Referenced Scriptures: Philippians 3:18-19; Jeremiah 5:25; Proverbs 13:10; Proverbs 28:25; Psalm 138:6; 1 Peter 5:5-6; Luke 14:11; James 4:7-10; Matthew 6:2-3, 5-6, 16-17; Leviticus 16:29-31

Act!

Sermon 17 Mar 2019

Act! by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  If you practise your righteousness to be seen by the world, your reward will be in the world, and your reward will end with the world.  Abram made a commitment to God and fulfilled it through his actions, and God Himself was Abram’s reward!  But it required more than commitment: it required action.

Lectionary: Genesis 15:1-18; Psalm 27; Philippians 3:17-4:1; Luke 13:22-30

Trust!

Sermon 10 Mar 2019

Trust! by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  Lent is a time for us to examine the depths of our hearts: if we judge ourselves we will not be judged.  Do we trust our Lord enough to obey Him, even when it makes no sense to us?

  • Every good thing you have is from the Lord
  • He will be your refuge (protection) and stronghold (base of attack) if you trust Him enough to obey Him
  • Faith starts in the heart, is proclaimed with your lips, and finishes its work in your actions
  • Faith is proven when you do the right thing even when no one knows

Lectionary: Deuteronomy 26:1-11; Psalm 91:1-16; Romans 10:6b-13; Luke 9:28-36

Referenced Scriptures: 1 Corinthians 11:27-31; 1 Timothy 2:12-14; 1 Corinthians 11:3; Ephesians 5:22-27

Not for the praise of men

Sermon 06 Mar 2019  Ash Wednesday

Not for the praise of men by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  Jesus tells us that if we do our good works for the praise of men, then the praise of men is all the reward we will ever receive.  Though Jonah eventually did the Lord’s will, his goal was to be praised by men.

Commit!

Sermon 03 Mar 2019

Commit! by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  Commit: to promise your loyalty, time, talents, and treasure to something, and to intentionally fulfill that promise through action.  Two examples of commitment from Scripture: Shadrach, Meschach, and Abed-Nego; and Ruth to Naomi.

During Lent:  Holy Spirit, I commit to allow You to examine and transform my life, even though I do not know where that will take me … because I trust in You..
