Sermon 16 August 2020 (Proper 15)

Gather together as the Church by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  You’ve heard it said that the Church is not a building, but the people of God. So if a building is not required, then perhaps meeting together in one place is not necessary either. NOT!

Lectionary: Isaiah 56:1-7; Psalm 67:1-7; Romans 11:25-32; Matthew 14:22-33 (sermon not from lectionary)

Referenced Scriptures: Ephesians 4:1-6,11-16; Galatians 6:2; Proverbs 27:17; Hebrews 10:19-25

The sad, sad story of Jonah

Sermon 09 August 2020 (Proper 14)

The sad, sad story of Jonah by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  Today’s first reading is a glorious testimony to God: to His attentiveness, His faithfulness, His power, and His love.  Unfortunately for Jonah personally, this was the high point of his relationship with God, as far as we know. Rather than measure his success by God’s scale, Jonah used his own standard: he put a higher priority on his own reputation than he did on God’s purposes.  Jonah valued his own image over the lives and souls of those to whom God was sending him.

Lectionary: Jonah 2:1-9; Psalm 29:1-11; Romans 10:6-11; Matthew 14:22-33

Referenced Scriptures: Jonah 1-4

Sermon 02 August 2020 (Proper 13)

Are you living in the “end times”? by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  Jesus spoke to the disciples directly about the end times. “Take heed that no one deceives you. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many.” “Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many.” “For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.” Hmmm, there seems to be a pattern here….

Lectionary: Isaiah 55:1-5; Psalm 145:8-21; Romans 9:1-5; Matthew 14:13-21 (sermon not from lectionary)

Referenced Scriptures: Matthew 23-24; Acts 1:9-11; Ephesians 5:18-21; Ephesians 5:25

Sermon 02 August 2020 (Proper 13)

You have more than you realize by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  Upon hearing of John the Baptist’s beheading Jesus needed some time with His Father and His disciples, but the people needed Him even more. The disciples were concerned for the people’s hunger, but had next to nothing … or so they thought.

Lectionary: Isaiah 55:1-5; Psalm 145:8-21; Romans 9:1-5; Matthew 14:13-21

Referenced Scriptures: Romans 8:29; Matthew 25:14-30; 1 Kings 17:8-16; Matthew 6:8

Your final destination

Sermon 26 July 2020 (Proper 12)

Your final destination by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  Salvation is a gift; it is also a covenant requiring us to make choices. The parable of the treasure hidden in a field illustrates this: the treasure was a gift included in the price of the field, but the one who found it had to choose to buy it … and then to sell all he had.

God says your final destination is to be conformed to the image of Christ. Every day you and I make choices that bring us either closer to that destination, or take us further from it.

Lectionary: 1 Kings 3:5-12; Psalm 119:121-136; Romans 8:26-30; Matthew 13:44-52

Referenced Scriptures: Romans 8:13; Matthew 6:33; Matthew 6:24; Matthew 25:14-30; Psalm 34:8; 1 Peter 5:8; Matthew 13:18-19

Sermon 19 July 2020 (Proper 11)

Whom you trust, you follow by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  God created you; He loves you; His Holy Spirit is with you to lead you and protect you; there is nowhere you can go that is beyond His reach. The flesh is subject to satan, who is the father of lies. In the choices you make throughout each day, who do you follow?

Lectionary: Isaiah 44:1-8; Psalm 139:1-12; Romans 8:12-18; Matthew 13:36-43

Referenced Scriptures: John 4:14; Joel 2:28; Acts 2:17; Psalm 139:13; Isaiah 41:10; John 8:44; John 1:12-13; Matthew 13:28-30; Matthew 7:1

Sermon 12 July 2020 (Proper 10)

Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  There are times when the Lord draws really near to you, don’t let them pass you by. But to seek Him you must turn away from those things which are not of Him. There are many ways for us to examine ourselves; this is a real-life example.

Sermon 05 July 2020 (Proper 9)

Inalienable rights by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  Inalienable rights are (a) legal and moral entitlements (b) belonging to a created human being which are not bestowed by law, custom, or belief. They are beyond the control of governments because they are given by God to every individual at conception, and only God can take them away. How shall we use them?

Lectionary: Song of Solomon 2:8-13; Psalm 45:1-17; Romans 7:21-8:1; Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30  (sermon not from lectionary)

Referenced Scriptures: Genesis 2:7; Genesis 1:27; Genesis 2:16-17; Genesis 2:8-9; Genesis 2:15; Genesis 3:22-24; Hebrews 9:27; Romans 6:23; Deuteronomy 28:15; Genesis 4:7; Joshua 24:14-15; Acts 5:29; Galatians 5:19-21; Matthew 5:2-11; Revelation 22:14; John 1:12; Acts 5:26-29, 33

Do you grieve the Holy Spirit?

Sermon 28 June 2020 (ICCEC Foundation Day)

Do you grieve the Holy Spirit? by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  Hananiah and Jeremiah prophesied into a specific situation, but Hananiah’s words were not God’s words: they were what he wished to be true. How do we know if we’re interpreting the Word like Jeremiah, or misinterpreting it like Hananiah? Going further, how do we know if we’re a slave of sin, or a servant of God?

Lectionary: Jeremiah 28:5-9, 15-17; Psalm 89:1-4, 7-10, 15-18, 50-52; Romans 6:16-23; Matthew 10:37-42

Referenced Scriptures: Psalm 89:27, 38-49; Proverbs 3:11-12 ; Hebrews 12:5-6; 2 Peter 3:9; James 4:6; Jeremiah 28:1-4, 10-14; Genesis 27:40; Isaiah 14:25; Jeremiah 27:9-10; Jeremiah 29:5-7; Hebrews 4:12; 2 Timothy 2:15; Romans 6:11-15; John 16:8; Romans 8:2; 1 Corinthians 3:16; Acts 1:8; Galatians 5:22-23; Ephesians 4:30; 2 Corinthians 13:5; 1 John 1:6-7; 1 John 2:15-16; Matthew 7:23

Sermon 21 June 2020

No reserve, no retreat, no regret by Fr. Dana

Simple Summary:  If you stand with the Lord you will encounter all manner of opposition.  You are immersed in a culture that increasingly demands you depart from standing for the Lord. How will you respond? Your answer can change the world.

Lectionary: Jeremiah 20:7-13; Psalm 69:1-18; Romans 6:1-11; Matthew 10:24-33

Referenced Scriptures: Jeremiah 18:1-18; Matthew 7:21-23; Psalm 91:7-8; Matthew 4:4; Matthew 6:33; Daniel 1-12; Matthew 6:21; Colossians 3:17
